Each day explore a science concept, create a project, hear a story, and enjoy moving to music!  Different theme each week!

 

Basic Camp Schedule:

9:30-10:00am Arrive for gathering activity

Afternoon schedule is similar to the morning schedule.


 Oceans Below! May 24th through May 28th
 Explore the deepest part of the sea to the shallows and shore.  We will use our imaginations to explore the deepest regions of the sea.  Our science lessons will show us what we can see in the ocean's reefs, tide pools, and beaches!

 Science Topics:  The deep part of the sea, reefs, sea mammals, tide pools, the shore

Science project: Make a chart of the ocean with examples of sea life in each depth!

Craft projects: Glowing sea creature, Jellyfish mobile, dolphin picture, clay sea urchin, pet crab friend (made with a pasta shell)

 Additional activities: Read A House for Hermit Crab by Eric Carle

 

 Little Gardeners - May 31st through June 4th
 Growing things is a great summer thing to do. Little gardeners will explore what make a great place to grow great things by learning about soils, light, and water.  Every gardener will complete a garden box full of growing things to take care of for the rest of the summer!

 Science Topics: Life cycle of flowering plants, farming without dirt, garden helper bugs and worms

Science Projects: Make a garden box featuring soil, sand, and hydroponic growing sections, Observe a week-long growing experiment and record observations.

Craft Projects:  Paper flower arrangement, caterpillar magnet, dirt picture, earthworm habitat.

Additional activities: Sing and dance to Dancing Bees and read Squirm Earthworm Squirm

 

3-2-1 Blast Off to Space! June 7th through June 11th
 Blast off week is fantastic s we study our solar system, recount the successes of several unmanned planetary missions, talk about stars and other hot planetary stuff, discover what astronauts do and make our own rocket models!

Science Topics: Our neighborhood solar system, Unmanned Space travel to Venus, Mercury, and Mars, Stars and space volcanoes, Life on the Space Shuttle and Space Station, Action and reaction-the secret to rocket flight!

Science Projects: Solar system coloring book, safe model rockets

Craft Projects: Create a spacecraft from reusable materials, space volcano, space suit, rocket model.

 

 Kitchen Concoctions - June 14th through June 18th
 We will make extraordinary thins from ordinary kitchen ingredients.  We'll explore some basic chemistry concepts and make our own paints, modeling dough, and watercolors!

Science Topics: Liquids versus solids, Mixing two things to produce something completely different, Density, Solubility (will that wash away?), Colors or white light

Science Projects:Balloon blowing machine, funny putty, ocean bottles, and rainbow charts

Craft Projects: putty-bead necklaces, squishy balls, coffee sculpting dough, soap crayons, wacky watercolor set.

 

 Bug Camp - June 21st through June 25th
 No summer is complete without bugs!  Learn about the life cycle of bugs, garden helpers, glow-in-the-dark bugs, ants, and other yucky but important bug friends!

 Science Topics: Characteristics of bugs, Helpers versus pests, Life in the colony of bees, Glow-in-the dark friends, bugs that clean

Science Project: Make a chart of the life cycle of insects

Craft Projects: Create a bug creature from reusable materials, Ladybug Puppet, Beehive, glow-in-the-dark worm, ant trail picture frame

Additional Activities: Insect parts song, Fiddle Dee Dee song, Caterpillar Spring, Butterfly Summer

 

 Dinosaur Camp - June 28th through July 2nd
Explore the different periods when dinosaurs roamed the land!  We'll talk about meat-eaters, plant-eaters, big dinosaurs, small dinosaurs, and feathered dinosaurs!  Could some dinosaurs still be with us today?

Science Topics:  Land creatures, sea creatures, how big is big?  How small is small? Dino Feathers-show or flight?

Science Project: Make a chart of different sized dinosaurs

Craft Projects: Dinosaur pencil holder, Dino "fossils", Dino tooth necklace, Dino feet to wear, Dino dig hat

Additional Activities: Read Edwina, The Dinosaur who Didn't Know She Was Extinct.

 

Pirates Ahoy! July 5th through July 9th
 Shipping and sailing in the 1700s and 1800s could be dangerous, and always promised adventure!  We'll explore some of the ways goods and riches were transported, both scheduled and unscheduled, along the warm waterways.  Discover some real aspects of pirate life such as getting to vote, tying knots, navigation, and of course, TREASURE!

 Science Topics: Democracy and Voting, Nautical knots, materials that float, lighthouses, real riches-commerce of the 1800s.

Science Projects: Make a chart of 3 knots, make a chart of old currency

Craft Projects: Pirate flag, sailing boat, lighthouse model, treasure boxes

 Magic Camp - July 12th through July 16th
 Everyone get ready to be amazed!  Campers will amaze everyone when they learn magic tricks they perform at their very own magic show!  We will make costumes, stage, our own magic tricks, and perform a Show on Friday, July 24th.

 Science Topics: Presentation is all about the eye, things aren't always what they seem- illusions, more from less, the power of secret compartments.

Costume projects: Prop scarves, Hats, Wands, and Capes

Magic Tricks: Magic appearances, illusions, make more from less, secret compartment boxes

###Campers will perform a  full magic show featuring the tricks they've learned.  Performance is Friday, July 24th at 2:00 pm!  Family, friends, and anyone at Play Plus are invited to the show!  Refreshments served after the show######

 

 Up and Away! Explore Flight - July 19th through July 23rd

 We'll look at things that fly from the natural world to flying machines!  We will have fun building flying things with and without wings, and imagine what future aircraft will look like.

 Science topics: Study birds and insects and talk about lift.  Discover how to fly without wings, how wings produce lift, action and reaction.

Science project: Make a chart of different ways to fly

Craft projects: Kites, hot air balloons, helicopter droppers, paper planes, model rockets (non-powered) futuristic air or space craft from reusable materials

 

Drama Week July 26th through July 30th
We will put on a show!  We'll study costumes, some performing, and having fun on stage!  Of course, lots of dress up and pretending will happen this week.

Science topics: Study how light and colors are used to light up a stage or performance area.  Look at imagination and how we use it to tell stories.

Craft Projects: Make everything for our stage and performance.  Funny Hats, props and all kinds of great things to take home.
